Holt-Howard
- When we think of "Pixie" condiment holders, the first manufacturer that comes to mind is Holt-Howard. Grant Holt, John Howard, and Robert Howard started Holt-Howard when they were in college with a $10,000 loan from their parents! Bob Howard's artistic creativity and imagination in designing the facial expressions of his beloved Pixiewares was truly one of the reasons for their huge success. In 1958, the Holt-Howard Company introduced the pixies by coming out with the Jam 'n Jelly, Mustard and Ketchup. They were advertised as
First in the family, Fun characters for table or buffet... yellow striped Mustard, red striped Ketchup, and pink striped Jam 'n Jelly. Head, cover and spoon in one clever unit". The jars
are 4-1/4" wide and 2-3/4" tall; with the head closure they are 5-1/2" tall (except for Lil' Sugar which is shorter). They have vertical stripes and a flat pixie head. Their number of stripes
vary with the condiment. A spoon (called a "Spoofy Spoon") is attached to each pixie head (except for the Olives which has a fork/spear). The term "spoofy spoon" is meant to mean a hidden spoon.
The Cherries, Onions and Olives were first introduced as a bar set and had "Cocktail" in the pixie name. Holt-Howard advertised this set as Party Talk Provokers". The lettering "Cocktails"
was shortly removed from the jar as a marketing strategy to remove the bar and alcohol restriction of this piece to allow for more versatility and individual consumer uses, so the jars with "Cocktail" are
more rare than the regular ones. |

VC106 - Vintage Holt-Howard Jam 'n Jelly Pixie - $150
The Jam 'n Jelly was one of the first 3 pixies that Holt-Howard produced. She has 11 pink stripes that match her head
color. The Jam was individually boxed and sold, but she was also featured in B. Altman & Company's 1958 Christmas Catalog and sold as a 3-piece set with the Ketchup and Mustard for $4.95. The
Jam spoon is curved and designed to scoop out it's contents. The cute little girl head is licking her lips wanting to get some of that Jam! |
|
|
VC088 - Vintage Holt-Howard Mustard Pixie - $150
The Mustard was one of the first 3 pixies that Holt-Howard produced. He has 11 yellow stripes that match his head
color. The Mustard was individually boxed and sold, but he was also featured in B. Altman & Company's 1958 Christmas Catalog and sold as a 3-piece set with the Jam 'n Jelly and Ketchup for $4.95.
Mustard appears annoyed and unhappy in an effort to conceal his spicy condiment. The mustard spoon was designed as a spreader, rather than a scoop spoon like the Jam 'n Jelly. |
|
|
VC080 - Vintage Holt-Howard Ketchup Pixie - $170
The Ketchup was one of the first 3 pixies that Holt-Howard produced. He has 11 red/orange stripes that match his head
color. The Ketchup was individually boxed and sold, but he was also featured in B. Altman & Company's 1958 Christmas Catalog and sold as a 3-piece set with the Jam 'n Jelly and Mustard for $4.95.
The Ketchup spoon was designed as a spreader, rather than a scoop spoon like the Jam 'n Jelly. Although the Ketchup pixie was advertised as red, the coloration definitely lends itself to a tomato red,
more orange in appearance. The Ketchup is really hard to find without staining as it was one of the pieces that was used most often and ketchup stains the jar.. that's why the ketchup is a higher price
than the mustard or jelly. |

VC057 - Vintage Holt-Howard Ketchup Pixie w/Box - $270
Here is the Ketchup Pixie with the original box. |
|
|
VC138 - Holt-Howard Lil' Sugar and Cream Crock Pixie - $275
Lil' Sugar jar was advertised in Holt-Howard's catalog as follows: "Aqua striped little girl with a little red curl just right for the
middle of your table.. an any occasion gift." The phrase Lil' Sugar is very significant here since this pixie is shorter than all her cousins. She measures 5" high - a half inch shorter than the
rest of the Pixieware clan. Although most of her pixie cousins' heads measure 2-1/2" to 2-5/8" ear to ear, she has the smallest head, measuring only 2-1/4" wide. Accordingly, her sugal bowl is
much smaller than the rest of the Pixiewares' bowls. The Lil' Sugar's aqua bow in her hair matches the 10 aqua stripes on her jar. She comes equipped with her very own personalized matching Cream
Crock which measures 2-3/4" high; it also has 10 aqua stripes. The Cream Crock was not designed with a pixie head. This adorable twosome were sold as a 3-piece set and were copyrighted
1959. This piece, along with the Olives jar were two of the first winking pixies to be created by Holt-Howard. Crock are in excellent condition. |
|
|
VC192 - Holt-Howard Lil' Sugar and Cream Crock Pixie - Repaired - $155
This is the same set as above but is priced less because the spoon has a repaired break. The repair is one of the best I've seen on the
spoon and the person that sold it to me honestly didn't know it was repaired! The break is on the spoon that sits inside the jar so can't be detected when displayed. |

VC096 - Vintage Holt-Howard Olives Pixie - $225
The Olives pixie is the only Pixieware condiment container designed without a spoon, instead, he is equipped with a stainless
steel fork, and occasionally he has a spear . The Olives was the one Holt-Howard pixie that was responsible for Pixiewares' undeserved nickname of the infamous "Martian heads." Due to the color
and shape of his head, unfamiliar flea market dealers labeled him as a Martian, and his pixie cousins would soon be shackled with the same association. The Olives pixie wears his own namesake on his
nose - an olive with two leaves. His left eye winks, and if you look closely, his pimento smile is very apparent. He stands has 10 stripes that match his head coloring. |
|
|
VC094 - Vintage Holt-Howard "COCKTAIL" Olives Pixie - $325
This is the "Cocktail" Olives pixie which is more rare than the regular Olives Pixie. The Olives pixie is the only
Pixieware condiment container designed without a spoon, instead, he is equipped with a stainless steel fork, and occasionally he has a spear . The Olives was the one Holt-Howard pixie that was

|
VC121 - Holt Howard Cherries Pixie - $275
The Cherries pixie head is equipped with a hole in the base of his "Spoofy Spoon". The Cherries and the Onions were the
only pixies that had a hole in their spoon. They were designed this way to ensure a drain-dry dripless spoon. Cherries looks crossed-eyed at his nose, while expressing a look of surprise. The
Cherries' red nose coloration matches the eight red stripes on its base (this is the only HH pixie condiment jar with 8 stripes). |
|
|
VC120 - Holt Howard "COCKTAIL" Cherries Pixie - $350
This is the "Cocktail" Cherries pixie which is more rare than the regular Cherries Pixie. The Cherries pixie head is
equipped with a hole in the base of his "Spoofy Spoon". The Cherries and the Onions were the only pixies that had a hole in their spoon. They were designed this way to ensure a drain-dry dripless
spoon. Cherries looks crossed-eyed at his nose, while expressing a look of surprise. The Cherries' red nose coloration matches the eight red stripes on its base (this is the only HH pixie condiment jar
with 8 stripes). |
|
|
VC118 - 1958 vintage Holt Howard Onions Pixie - $275
The Onions pixie head is equipped with a hole in the base of his "Spoofy Spoon." They were designed this way to ensure a
drain-dry dripless spoon. This imp bares his namesake as the nose. The onion appears asphyxiated and on the verge of tears from concealing his overwhelming contents. His green hair, ears and
lined face match the coloration of the 10 green stripes. |
|
|
VC128 - Holt Howard "COCKTAIL" Onions Pixie - $400 - SOLD
This is the "Cocktail" Onions pixie which is more
rare than the regular Onions Pixie. The Onions pixie head is equipped with a hole in the base of his "Spoofy Spoon." They were designed this way to ensure a drain-dry dripless spoon. This imp
bares his namesake as the nose. The onion appears asphyxiated and on the verge of tears from concealing his overwhelming contents. His green hair, ears and lined face match the coloration of the 10
green stripes. |

|
VC139 - Holt-Howard Instant Coffee Pixie Jar - $425 This adorable impish pixie cousin
was advertised as "Miss Coffee-Bean Herself." She has a seal-tight, white rubber gasket around her lid which would keep instant coffee air-tight, fresh and dry. The Instant Coffee
pixie wears two light blue bows in her hair - one on top and the other in the back of her head. These bows match the color of her jar's 11 stripes. Because of her coffee-colored face, she is
regarded as a crossover collectible by collectors of black memorabilia. The Instant Coffee is hard to find in mint condition. You often see her with a broken neck since her air tight seal
functioned so perfectly, it often caused her thin neck to snap at the base as a consequence of consumers pulling on her head to release the seal. And some have lost their gasket, which then is an
incomplete pixie set. So finding one with it's original gasket and unbroken neck is a real find! |
|
|
VC136 - Holt-Howard Relish Pixie Jar - $425
As 1959 came around, Holt-Howard introduced the Relish, Honey, Mayonnaise and Chili Sauce. There was a dimensional style change in the
pixie heads to more of a diamond shape. The relish jar is the only Pixieware piece of the original 12 jars that has such an elongated head from ear to ear. The peevish expression on his face
almost gives you the feeling that he is annoyed because someone pulled on his ears and stretched his face! If you examine the relish's hairdo, you see the new pixie hairstyle for the 1959 pixies - a
rounded, somewhat elliptical balled-end knob. All previous 1958 pixies had spoke like hairdos (except for the Onions and Olives, which were flat tops). The relish jar has a scallion-leafed neck,
turquoise-colored face and 10 stripes that match his face color. |
|
|
VC137 - Holt-Howard Mayonnaise Pixie Jar with BOX - $625
Better picture coming soon! It is thought that Holt-Howard was the only company to ever manufacture this type of a mayonnaise jar.
The mayonnaise is a winking pixie, just like some of her other cousins (Honey, Chili Sauce, Lil' Sugar and Olives). An interesting observation in the 1959 pixies is that three out of four are winkers,
and their opened eyes always look to their left. The mayonnaise jar, with her rosy colored cheeks, stands 5.5"" tall. Her butterscotch-colored hair and nose match the 10 stripes on her jar. This
mayonnaise still has her original box. |
|
|
VC117 - 1959 Vintage Holt Howard Chili Sauce Pixie w/ spoofy spoon - $825
The Chili Sauce pixie is the only one out of the original 12 condiment jars that has a differently designed base. This
jar was not only designed with 10 vertical stripes, but was also lined with sets of six black oval droplets between its stripes. These droplets are supposed to be indicative of spilled-over dried Chili
Sauce. The chili Sauce's heart shaped lips match her jar's stripes, while her blushing red cheeks and ears have the appearance of being air brushed and are more of a lighter red. Once again, due
to the limited production in 1959, the Chili Sauce is the second most difficult piece to find today (compared to the honey). |
|
|
VC135 - Holt-Howard Honey Pixie Jar - $975 - SOLD Honey is the only one of the clan that has a brown eye. This piece and the olives jar
are the only pixies whose winking eyes sweep downward in a sleepy closed position, while all the rest of the winking cousins have their winking eyes upright in a flirtatious-type gesture. The surprised
expression on the honey's face almost lends one to believe that she is stuck and cannot remove herself from her jars sticky contents. Holt Howard was the only company to manufacture a honey jar of this
type. Two rumors concerning the honey jar's scarcity in today's marketplace are certain to be fact: 1) over the years, many honey necks snapped from consumers scooping the heavy sticky honey and
the jars were tossed in the garbage; 2) due to Holt-Howard's limited production of this jar, she is a very rare and difficult piece to find. The Honey jars yellow face has rosy colored cheeks and
stands 5.5" tall. Her brown hair matches the stripes on her jar. |

|
VC152 - Holt-Howard Cozy Kitten Jam Jar - SOLD The kitten condiment jars are a series of five jars and a cream crock that were featured in a 1962 Holt-Howard catalog. None are signed on the bottom. The
Jam 'n Jelly has a scoop spoon; the Ketchup and Mustard have a spreader (like the pixies). The Jam has pink splotches on the base, the Ketchup has green splotches, and the Mustard has Yellow
splotches. The Instant Coffee has blue splotches and has a seal-tight white ring around its lid and a scoop spoon, just like the Pixieware instant coffee. The Lil' Sugar cat head has the same
coloration as the Jam 'n Jelly cat condiment and comes with a matching Cream Crock. These adorable condiments were not manufactured on as large scale as some of the earlier cat series and consequently
are harder to find in today's collectible marketplace. |

VC155 - Holt-Howard Italian Dressing Pixie - $300
The smiling trio of salad dressing jars are the flat-headed pixies (there was also a round headed set) salad dressing jars. Each one of
these distinguished fellows has a face and hat that is somewhat indicative of his country of origin. This is the Italian Dressing Pixie. The Italian stopper is orange with black polkadots - the
orange color matches his orange nose and mouth. The Italian dressing looks right and his green hat matches the jar stripes. A snug fitting cork is located at the base of the head to plug
into the jar and keep the dressing fresh and spill-proof. The dressing jar has a spout to pour out its contents. The dressing jar stands 7" tall and has 8 vertical stripes. He holds about 8
ounces of liquid. |

VC208 - Holt Howard Mom and Dad Pixie Towel Hooks - $350
Wow! These are really rare. While trying to keep up with something new in kitchenware-related items, Holt-Howard created these smiling
pixie towel holders. They smile lovingly at each other and were equipped with screw in hooks which made them great for hanging dish towels, pot holders or other items. They are 4" tall with a
rectangular opening behind the figure's head (for a nail) to hang the piece onto a wall. The base of each figure has a drilled-through hole that accommodates a screw hook to secure the piece and
prevent it from sliding. |

GRANT HOWARD ASSOCIATES (GHA) - GHA was formed by Grant Holt and John Howard
after Bob Howard passed away. In 2001 they designed a limited run of pixies. They were designed by Curt Blanchard. Curt was a designer for Holt-Howard back in the 50's/60s. He left
Holt-Howard to work on other projects and then was asked to come back when GHA was formed. The pixies Curt designed for this limited run were pixie items that were not originally offered by Holt-Howard
back in the 50's. The pieces made by Grant Howard Associates are marked GHA. These items are now collector items also as they were only made for a short limited run and will not be produced
again. The prices keep going up every year! |

LEFTON
- Lefton made a number of girl head jars and they made a number of Pixie Jars too. They joined the bandwaggon to create Pixie condiments in the late 50's and 60's. Their pixie jars are an adorable line of fruit, veggie and human headed jars. Lefton's line has vertical striped bases topped off with a rounded full head. Lefton jars have a higher collar than Holt-Howard's jars, and they are more cylindrical in appearance rather than rounded. They all have 13 vertical stripes that do not necessarily match or correspond to any manner with the color of their heads. Lefton's standard jar bottoms measure 3.5 high and vary slightly in overall height according to the type of head closure they have. When compared to Holt-Howard, Lefton probably had the second largest selection of condiment jars to offer, and it created more jars than the other numerous knock-off companies. The majority of Lefton's jars are not signed but they are numbered in a black numeric series. There are also condiment jars that have the ESD markings in addition to the Lefton number. ESD was a Canadian distributor that imported Lefton's jars into Canada.

|
|
VC132 - Lefton Crying Onions Relish Pixie - $225
Most collectors see this onion head and assume that it belongs on an onion or cocktail onion base; however, according to Lefton's catalog, the
onion is the correct head for the relish jar. Since onion is a prime ingredient in the relish manufacturing process, it seems to make sense. This quite unhappy, tear-shedding condiment stands 6
inches tall and the brown coloration in its head matches the brown stripes in its base. Numeric identification #1481 is on the bottom and this jar still retains it's Lefton Sticker. |
|
|
VC122 - Lefton Apple Head Jam 'n Jelly Pixie w/Box- $300

VC150 - Lefton ESD Instant Coffee Pixie - $350 - SOLD
This Instant Coffee is very collectible, especially for collectors of black memorabilia. The cover to her lid is
slightly smaller in diameter than other jars in this series and sits down lower in the jar's neck; hence, the piece seems to appear to have a higher collar above the jar's opening, but it's really the same
as the others. Ms. Coffee wears a tropiccal flower in her hair and is equipped with a spoon. This piece has 13 coffee-brown stripes around the base with eight coffee beans pictured on the front
of the jar. She stands 5-3/4" tall and is signed ESD. Numeric identification 7860. |

1/2 inches tall and measures approximately 12 inches round at his widest point. |
|
|
VC151 - Lefton Marmalade Pixie - $225
It's not too often in the United States that we see marmalade condiment jars, since marmalade was more popular in England than
here; however, this cute orange fruit head is an adorable companion to the Jam 'n Jelly. The dark hunter-green stripes on this base do not match any of the coloration on its top; however, marmalade is
made frrom oranges, so, of course, this is the correct match. If we include the upright leaf on her head, this marmalade stands 6" high. Numeric identification 1483. |
|
|
VC083 - Lefton Cocktail Cherries Pixie - $275
This is the adorable winking Cocktail Pixie. It is much smaller than the other Lefton jars. She stands a little
over 4" tall and has 13 vertical stripes. The spoon has a scalloped edge to help drain juices. Numeric identification #1480. She still retains her original Lefton Label. |

DAVAR
- All the Davar pixies are flat heads and somewhat thicker than Holt-Howard's. All were created with flesh-colored faces with minor modifications in their hair styles. The individual pixie's hair color was sometimes color coordinated to match the stripes on its base. All Davar pixie heads were equipped with spoons. More often than not, Davar signed and copyrighted its products; however, today many of this company's pieces are turning up without signatures or identifying foil labels. The pixies either had hair standing straight up or flopped to one side. The straight haired pixies had the block style print for the condiment and typically were not signed; the floppy haired ones had the script writing for the condiment name. They were all produced in 1959.
|
|
|
VC206 - Davar Script Floppy Hair Ketchup Pixie - $150
The cheerful Ketchup Pixie has red hair to match the writing on the jar. This it floppy haired pixie so the condiment
name appears in script writing. The flesh-colored arms on these condiments serve as handles and are standard design on all Davar Pixies. The Ketchup jar is inscribed in red lettering instead of
black. The Davar marking is on the bottom. |
